Understanding GST Types in India

India's GST system consists of four distinct types of taxes, each with specific purposes and collection authorities:

Central GST (CGST)

  • Collected by the Central Government
  • Applies to intra-state transactions
  • Governed by CGST Act
  • Equal rate as SGST

State GST (SGST)

  • Collected by State Governments
  • Applies to intra-state transactions
  • Governed by SGST Act
  • Equal rate as CGST

Integrated GST (IGST)

  • Collected by Central Government
  • Applies to inter-state transactions
  • Includes imports and exports
  • Distributed to states

Union Territory GST (UTGST)

  • Applies to Union Territories
  • Collected with CGST
  • Similar to SGST
  • For UT transactions

GST Rate Slabs in India (2026)

India uses a multi-slab GST structure. The rate applied depends on the HSN/SAC classification of the product or service — not on the seller's preference. Common slabs:

Rate Examples
0%Fresh milk, bread, educational services, healthcare
5%Packaged food items, transport services, coal
12%Processed food, business-class air travel
18%Most services, IT hardware, telecom, restaurants (non-AC)
28%Luxury cars, aerated drinks, tobacco products

GST exclusive → inclusive: A laptop priced at ₹50,000 (ex-GST) at 18% GST → GST = ₹9,000 → Customer pays ₹59,000.

GST inclusive → exclusive: An invoice shows ₹11,800 (GST inclusive) at 18% → Base = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 → GST component = ₹1,800. This is the calculation freelancers use when a client quote is "inclusive of all taxes."

CGST + SGST vs IGST: For intra-state sales, GST splits equally into CGST and SGST (9% + 9% = 18%). For inter-state sales, IGST at the full 18% applies. Our calculator shows total GST; your invoice must split by supply type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India.
How is GST calculated?
GST is calculated by applying the applicable rate to the taxable value of goods or services. For example, if the GST rate is 18% and the amount is ₹1000, the GST amount would be ₹180.
What are the different GST rates?
The main GST rates are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, with some items being exempt or taxed at special rates. The rate depends on the type of goods or services.
What is the difference between GST inclusive and exclusive?
GST inclusive means the price includes GST, while GST exclusive means GST needs to be added to the price. For example, if a product is priced at ₹1180 (GST inclusive) with 18% GST, the base price is ₹1000 and GST is ₹180.
