Retirement Planning in India: What to Include
Generic retirement calculators ignore India-specific income sources. When using this tool, treat these as part of your overall picture:
- EPF (Employees' Provident Fund): Mandatory for most salaried employees — 12% employee + 12% employer on basic salary. Check your passbook on the EPFO portal for current balance and projected corpus.
- PPF and NPS: Voluntary long-term savings with tax benefits. Model NPS separately with our NPS Calculator and add the projected corpus to "current savings" here.
- Employer gratuity: Payable after 5 years of continuous service — roughly 15 days' salary per completed year under the Payment of Gratuity Act.
- Inflation assumption: Use 5–6% for general expenses; healthcare costs in retirement often run higher — many planners use 7–8% for medical inflation.
Worked example: Priya is 32, wants to retire at 58, has ₹8 lakh in EPF + mutual funds, and needs ₹60,000/month in today's rupees. At 6% inflation, ₹60,000 at age 58 equals roughly ₹2.57 lakh/month in nominal terms. A corpus of about ₹5.5–6.5 crore (using a 25–30× annual expense heuristic and 6–7% post-retirement return) suggests she needs to invest roughly ₹35,000–45,000/month depending on return assumptions — this calculator lets you stress-test those inputs.
The 4% withdrawal rule is a US-centric guideline; in India many retirees combine SWP from debt funds, FD interest and rental income. Consult a SEBI-registered adviser for personalised planning. Methodology by our Tools Editor.
