Fuel Costs in India: Petrol, CNG, and EV Math
Indian fuel prices vary by state because of VAT/special duties — always use your local pump rate in this calculator. As a rough 2026 planning baseline: petrol often ₹95–105/litre in metros, diesel ₹85–95/litre, CNG ₹75–85/kg in NCR/Mumbai.
Worked example — Mumbai to Pune (~150 km one way): A petrol hatchback at 15 km/l and ₹102/litre burns 10 litres → ₹1,020 per leg, or ₹2,040 round trip. A diesel sedan at 18 km/l and ₹92/litre: 8.3 litres → ₹764 per leg. A CNG taxi at 25 km/kg and ₹80/kg: 6 kg → ₹480 per leg — why fleet operators prefer CNG where pumps exist.
Cost per km shortcut: Cost/km = fuel price ÷ mileage (km per litre or km per kg). For EVs, use cost/km = (units consumed × ₹/kWh) ÷ distance; home charging at ₹8/kWh vs public at ₹18/kWh doubles running cost. Include tolls (FASTag) separately — Mumbai–Pune expressway tolls add ₹200–400 each way for cars.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fuel cost calculator?
A fuel cost calculator helps you estimate the fuel expenses for your journeys. It considers factors like distance, fuel efficiency, fuel price, and vehicle type to provide accurate cost estimates.
How is fuel cost calculated?
Fuel cost is calculated by multiplying the distance by the fuel consumption rate (km/liter) and then multiplying by the current fuel price. The formula is: (Distance / Fuel Efficiency) * Fuel Price.
What factors affect fuel cost?
Several factors affect fuel cost including distance traveled, vehicle fuel efficiency, current fuel prices, driving conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driving habits.
