Leasing vs Buying a Car in India
True operational leasing (US-style) is uncommon for private buyers in India — most "lease" products are subscription plans from OEMs or third parties, or loan + buy via bank/NBFC. Compare all-in cost: down payment, EMI, insurance, maintenance, fuel, and resale value — not just monthly EMI.
Worked example — ₹12 lakh on-road SUV, 5 years: Buy with loan: ₹2L down, ₹10L loan at 9% for 60 months → EMI ≈ ₹20,800. Total outflow ≈ ₹2L + ₹12.48L EMI = ₹14.48L before insurance/maintenance. Residual value year 5 ≈ ₹5.5L → net cost ≈ ₹8.98L. Subscription/lease-style: ₹28,000/month × 60 = ₹16.8L with insurance often included but no asset — better only if you swap cars every 2–3 years or company pays.
When buying wins: Keeping the car 7+ years, low mileage, no penalty for early loan closure. When subscription wins: Employer car programme, frequent upgrades, or avoiding resale hassle in metros. EV buyers should factor home-charging cost and state road-tax waivers — subsidies change frequently.
